1601: The Poor Law (The 43rd Elizabeth and Parliament)

"The original purpose of the Poor Law was for the setting to work of the children of such parents as shall not, by the Churchwardens and Overseers, the thought able to keep and maintain their children; also for the setting to work married or unmarried persons as to have no means or daily trade of life. In addition it is intended to raise weekly, by the taxation of every inhabitant, a convenient stock of flax, hemp, wool, thread, iron, and other ware and stuff to set to work the poor.”

It also provided competent sums of money for the necessary relief of the lame, impotence, old, blind and poor not being able to work.
